Māya Natūra Botanica
An exploration of natural colours and the stories they tell.
The Māya Natūra Botanica Colour Project 🍃
At Māya, we are passionate about sustainability, heritage, and creativity. The Natūra Botanica Colour Project is our next step in celebrating these values—a vibrant exploration of botanical colour and artistic expression.
What Makes The Natūra Botanica Colour Project Unique?
We craft our colour palettes: From plants, roots, and minerals like madder, pomegranate, cutch, lac, and mallow flowers.
We bring natural colour to life: We experiment with print, paint, and mark-making projects.
We share heritage & encourage innovation: Drawing inspiration from fieldwork in Bagru, Jaipur, and across Indonesia and Malaysia, we honour traditional crafts while pushing creative boundaries.
We work sustainably: Every palette we create in Nātura Botanica is 100% natural and eco-friendly.
We focus on storytelling & design: Each colour, tool, and process reflects our passion for travel, textiles, and culture, ensuring every design tells a story.
Our one-of-a kind print and test print surfaces
In our workshops, right from the beginning, we explored a variety of print surfaces. We currently have four naturally dyed print surfaces and test print surfaces available. These include surfaces dyed with pomegranate and madder, myrobalan, indigo and also sea salt. We will launch more creative print surfaces in our “Craft Your Art” line this summer.
What’s Next at Nātura Botanica?
New Collections: Hand-crafted designs inspired by natural colours and artistry. This journey continues with trips to France and India this year.
Māya Block Print Berlin Workshops: Experience the process firsthand—explore printing, painting, and mark-making with botanical dyes. We’ll share the successes and failures of our experiments as we learn and explore with our participants.
Creative Stories: From inspiration and test printing to final creations, we’ll share a behind-the-scenes look at our discoveries and the cultural traditions that guide us.
Why Natūra Botanica?
This project is about more than colour—it’s about preserving stories, honouring traditions, and reimagining sustainable textile design.
Every block, dye, ink and tool reflects Māya’s motto: “Designed to make a difference.”
During our last visit to India in March 2024 we spend an extended period of time with the Medatwal family of printers in Bagru. We are inspired by the work created by Mr. Digamber Medatwal and his sons Avinash and Akash. We will build on the knowledge gained from our fieldwork and print experiences with all the studios, workshops and print masters we met and learned from. This photo was created in March 2024 at the dyeplant of the Medatwal family of printers. I was privileged to experience the village with Avinash, who took me around the village to see places that very few visitors see.
